One of the elderly men has terminal cancer and dies, but has left the woman his luxury apartment because she reminded him of his daughter.

Have them all talk about their various problems. The waitress is a single mom with three teenagers that she's trying to support on mimimum wage. The young couple have just discovered that they're going to have a baby, but the young woman knows that her mom had two miscarraiges, so she's worried she might have one too. The single young man is highly intelligent, and is almost through medical school, but he has just had letter from his disapproving father who has decided to stop paying his college tuition, and the young man can't get a job that pays enough for school. One elderly man's loving wife has just died leaving him with three grown-up childen who are not what he raised them to be. The other elderly man's wonderful son has just died in a terrible accident leaving him with a nagging shrew of a wife. The ending should be that they all realize that someone else will always have bigger problems than themselves, but that doesn't mean that their own pain doesn't count. That's also the moral of the story.

Here's what I would do: although the morals of each life story remains the same, each character lies (including the main character) by saying that they are infinitely rich. Why? Because everybody else at the table is. The truth, however, is that each one of them is as poor as the rest. After learning of everyone's distaste for their families, they make a pact to write each other in their wills, which they do at the table. (If you want to make it ironic, have the main character write hers on the back of the eviction notice.) As the night wears on (you might want a severe winter storm trapping them in the diner overnight) they all conspire and form alliances to kill off the others before daybreak. It should end with the main character and the younger man left as the sun rises. Here, the younger man finally admits that he doesn't have a penny to his name. Incredulous, the main character breaks down, realizing the truth of the situation and what she has done. The man, thinking he has an opportunity, attempts to kill the woman. He fails and dies in the process. Angry and frustrated, she knocks over everything in the diner and begins to tear the will to shreds. She turns on the radio half-heartedly and looks at the shreds of paper. The winning lottery numbers from the previous night are repeated. She realizes the torn will of the middle-aged waitress was on the back of the winning ticket.
