The worship of Allah

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

The worship of Allah is principal in a Muslim’s mind at all time. There are also five formal acts of worship which help strengthen a the faith and obedience of a Muslim. They are frequently called the “Five Pillars of Islam”. The Five Pillars of Islam are the framework and guidelines of the Muslim life. They are the testimony of faith, prayer, supporting the needy, fasting during the month of Ramadan, and the once in a lifetime trip to Makkah for those who are able to do so. These Five Pillars are the thing Muslim’s do to please God and to keep themselves well and happy in this lifetime and for the future ones to come. It was Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, who was reported to have said, “Islam is based upon five pillars”.

Live a life of purpose

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

When you live your life based on sentiments, trying not to hurt everyone’s feelings or doing things just because it feels good to do it, you’ll get nowhere twice as fast. Do not live by tradition either. If you do the same things the same way you have always done them, you will continue to get the same results. Do not live by tradition, it is an enemy of progress. Live by purpose.

Ask yourself, “How can I do it better this year than I did last year?” Success brooks no argument. It announces itself. Every morning before you set about the day’s work, ask God for directions. He is a God of plan and productivity. He set to work for 6days and the whole of the universe came into existence. Our Lord ministered for three and a half years and the whole world changed. That is effectiveness. “Efficiency” means to do things well; “effectiveness” means to get results. Strive not only to be efficient, go for effectiveness. When you get results people will bow to you.

People who are going nowhere keep waiting for the right time, or a better day. People who are going somewhere know that today is a better day.

Meaning of Life

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

In approaching the meaning of life we have to examine the nature of meaning itself. Meaning is by definition the point, or the intended goal. Consider the point of humans and the universe as seen from monotheistic religion. If life and the universe is some sort of toy or form of entertainment for some prime mover, his point, his own entertainment, would then be the meaning of humans and the universe. Consider the goals of the deities of various cultures. Some strive for a balance between the forces of ‘good’ and ‘evil’. This balance seems to simply be a choice of the deity, the way he thinks it ought to be. The concept of a prime mover as a source of the meaning of life is flawed, because in talking about an actual point to absolutely everything, we are simply considering the goals of a being more powerful than ourselves who has chosen one of many possible goals that humans can conceive of. This is to say that, if a god like this exists, his goal for life and the universe is not necessarily valid as a meaning of life, the universe, and himself. For instance, the Bible claims that the Christian deity created the universe and placed humans in it that they might be in awe of his power. If this is so, why is worship the correct response? The meaning of the universe as created by God is the entertainment of God, but what is the meaning of the larger system containing God and his creations? We could conceive of an even ‘primer’ mover, but that simply takes us all the way back into the wall of infinite regression.

Reflections on Christianity

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

First of all, I want to tell you couple of words about religion itself. Today, there are vast numbers of religions all over the world, with thousands of minor branches developed from each. I think religion is generalized set of moral values of one or another nation. As long as moral values vary from country to country, even from person to person, religion that developed in different parts of world should also be different. At first sight, this statement seems to be genuine. Indeed Hinduism is too far fetched from Christianity; Muslims have nothing to do with Jews… But let us not be fooled with first impressions. Idea that all religions have nothing to do with each other, or that they have different basics is a huge mistake.

To grasp that common trait we have to delve deep into the past, where all those ideas were born in the human conscience. There are few basic questions that troubled minds of those people. First one and most crucial I guess is the fear of death. There is no such person in the world who never thought about this fixed ending of our lives. We know so much about it – we see death everyday, everywhere - and at the same time we have no idea what lies beyond this physical world.
